Susan Stein, actor and certified teacher, will share her production Etty and discuss how the play can be used as a resource in the classroom. The Etty Project propels little known diaries into our own time to connect us with people from history, one story at a time. Workshops in schools consider the dangers and consequences of racism, antisemitism, and discrimination and promote social justice. Performances and workshops are customized to the venue and audience.
Etty Project’s educational programming, Recovering Lost Voices, works to foster empathy and empower students to see themselves as agents of change. Susan uses primary source documents and theatrical/musical/visual arts activities to confront antisemitism and promote human rights, social and racial justice.
Susan works closely with teachers and existing curricula to adapt workshops to the needs of individual classes, introducing skills and tools that enhance critical reading, writing, thinking, and speaking skills. Students engage in creative, collaborative problem-solving activities and generate their own artistic responses, which they can present to the school and broader community.
Etty Project visits may range from 45 minutes to multi-day residencies, as lessons are customized to grade levels, subject areas, and time frames. Lessons are organized around essential questions and meet Common Core.

About Susan:
Susan Stein is the founder of Etty Project, actor, playwright, and teaching artist. She has spent the past eleven years touring her original, one-woman play, Etty, to major theaters, universities, schools, prisons around the country and internationally and leading accompanying educational workshops.
Stein co-teaches Performing History at Duquesne University as part of the Inside/Outside Prison Exchange Program and has been an Artist/Scholar in residence at Cambridge University, Duquesne, Boston College, Vanderbilt, and Chapman University. Stein’s acting work includes Neil Simon’s Broadway Bound, Dominique Morisseau’s Pipeline, Meridith Friedman’s The Luckiest People, and Wendy Wasserstein’s The Sisters Rosensweig. Stein leads workshops in playwriting, writing and acting throughout the US and UK. Stein studied acting at NYU Graduate School and SUNY Purchase and received a Master’s in Writing at Wesleyan University. She taught at Princeton Day School for thirteen years.
