Winning Student Art on Display in Museum Lobby

First place winner "We shall becoming with our anguish and woe" by Rachel Schwan, a 10th grader at James A. Garfield High School.

Through May 5, the Maltz Museum will display artwork by the student winners of Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s Yom Hashoah art contest.  Guests can view the works in the museum lobby for free – no admission required.

As part of Cleveland’s annual Yom Hashoah V’Hagvura, Holocaust & Heroism Commemoration, students in grades 6-12 in Northeast Ohio schools were invited to participate in a Creative Arts contest for creative writing and visual arts. Cash prizes totaling $2,500 were awarded and winning entries were published in the Cleveland Jewish News.

This year’s Creative Arts theme was The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.  This year marks the 70th Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. For over one month in 1943, Jewish resistance fighters held off their German oppressors in a stunning display of courage and heroism. Use the experience of the uprising or other uprisings as an inspiration for your creative arts project. You may want to adopt the vantage point of a resistance fighter, ghetto inhabitant in hiding or an outside viewer of the events.
