Maltz Films: The Great Gabbo
November 18 | 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

One of cinema’s earliest psychological dramas, The Great Gabbo (1929) stars legendary filmmaker and actor Erich von Stroheim as a celebrated ventriloquist whose unrequited love and growing obsession with his puppet lead to a disturbing descent into madness. Jewish influence runs throughout the film, with von Stroheim and acclaimed screenwriter Ben Hecht among its key creative voices. This screening includes 1929 newsreels and cartoons, plus an introduction and post-film discussion with Ygal Kaufman of Cleveland State University.
