Featured in our Jewish Immigration exhibit, this bilingual placard, printed in English and Yiddish, once encouraged Cleveland’s growing Jewish immigrant community to support “Hebrew education for every child.” Though modest in size, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the languages, values, and aspirations that helped shape a generation of newcomers.

Sean will explore what this artifact reveals about the early development of Jewish education in Cleveland and how those efforts evolved over time. Along the way, we’ll consider some larger questions: How does language influence identity and belonging? What did Jewish education look like a century ago, and how has it changed? And how do we preserve and pass along the traditions, values, and stories inherited from previous generations?
