Tuesday Treasures: Miracles & Memories

Every Chanukah lamp carries two kinds of miracle. One is documented history: the Maccabees’ military victory and the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple in 164 B.C.E. The other is legend, the story of the single vial of oil that burned for eight days.
This Tuesday Treasures session explores that same tension between the events that happened and the stories that came to define them, through the case of one Chanukah lamp in our collection. Rescued during the Second World War in circumstances almost too dramatic to believe, its documented history is itself the kind of story that becomes legend.
The lamps themselves tell a parallel story of diversity. Across the centuries and across Jewish communities, they have taken remarkably different forms: from silver candelabra modeled on the Temple menorah to simple eggshells to support the candle. Together, the lamp and its history offer a way to think about how communities transform real events into the foundational stories that carry meaning across generations.
