The Maltz Museum is proud to partner with the Cleveland Israel Arts Connection and Congregation Mishkan Or Museum on programming for Memory: Moshe Gershuni, a major exhibition exploring the passionate and deeply personal work of one of Israel’s most significant artists. Moshe Gershuni (1936-2017) created art that reflects the challenges of Israeli life, often addressing grief and memory while blending cultural and historical references, including Jewish and Christian religious ideas and the Holocaust. The exhibition features “Kaddish,” Gershuni’s magnificent 1997 portfolio illustrating Allen Ginsberg’s homonymous poem written on the death of his mother, with 24 images screen-printed on gold leaf alongside a Hebrew translation by Israeli poet Natan Zach.
As part of this collaboration, the Maltz Museum is screening M.G. Rehearsals for Departure, a beautifully shot dramatic documentary by Ziva Postek in which Moshe Gershuni, the artiste, is not only questioned as an object but actively participates. One of Israel’s most important and internationally acclaimed artists, Gershuni reveals his most intimate life motives. Gershuni represents the Jewish-Israeli experience in all its diversity: Yiddish & Hebrew, Holocaust & Zionism, a romantic longing for western culture and a “Native” Israeli world. All these motives blend into an immense experience of authentic emotional tensions and conflicts.
