Early Music, Jews and Antisemitism at CWRU

Friday, May 23, 10:30 am
Held at Siegal Lifelong Learning
$20 General Admission includes light breakfast at 10:00 am

Explore the historical performance movement with David Rothenberg, PhD, Professor of Music, CWRU. Jewish musicians have long been active in the early music (now more often called “historical performance”) movement, which performs music from before 1750 using period instruments and techniques. While Jewish musicians are not absent from the history of this music, they do not figure prominently in it. Although the music is often beautiful, it contains persistent strands of antisemitism, some casual, some deep and structural. Can we enjoy the music while acknowledging antisemitism? Does performing music by Jewish composers like Salamone Rossi (c 1570– 1630) help? These and other questions will be discussed.
