Fall Preview

August 15, 2013
The summer season (May 1 – Labor Day) is coming to a close.  It is now time for the Maltz Museum to start gearing up for fall.  Much like television, we have a full-slate of programs that will keep you entertained in the months to come.  Unfortunately, you cannot DVR these programs, so make your plans now so you don’t miss out!

Beitler_p_pj_2The highlight of this season is the premiere of Traitor: Spies, Lies and Justice Denied – The Dreyfus Affair.  Opening October 8, the exhibition, created exclusively for the Maltz Museum by Gallagher & Associates, will transport visitors to 1890s Paris – Belle Époque, or “The Beautiful Era.”  A period characterized by optimism, peace, and advances in technology and science also contained French anti-Semitism and government corruption.  In 1894, a false charge of treason sanctioned by the government and promoted viciously by the country’s media sent a Jewish army officer named Alfred Dreyfus to life imprisonment on Devil’s Island.  The Maltz Museum, in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania’s Lorraine Beitler Collection of the Dreyfus Affair, brings the story of this landmark event to life through newspapers, posters, photographs, and an immersive exhibition design.  Traitor! will be on display through mid-January.

Programs this season will include a panel discussion about the influence of media on public perception; lectures about Emile Zola and Theodore Herzl and their connections to the Dreyfus Affair; and an emotional talk with an exonerated felon from the Innocence Project. Other events in the coming months include:

  • Movie Night: Everything Is Illuminated featuring Q & A with Betty Gold (Sept. 11)
  • Beachwood Week Celebration: wine & cheese reception and more! (Sept. 25)
  • 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht (Nov. 9)
